Although simpler in nature compared to DC chargers, AC charging stations safely deliver AC power from the electrical grid into the vehicle. Varistors

Because the conversion from AC to DC power is being done in the charging station, these units can provide higher levels of power (50kW to 350kW and beyond) to the vehicle compared to AC charging stations. These varistors are intended for products that require voltage clamping of high transient surge currents from sources such as lightning, inductive load switching, or capacitor bank switching.
